Holidaying should be about getting away from it all, forgetting work and other daily distractions and recharging our batteries. Why then would I feel the need to take, what feel’s like, my whole studio with me?! For me, taking pictures is about meeting new people, experimenting with new techniques and learning more about this art that I love.
I was as surprised as any though when, minding my own business at our hotel in Tunisia I happened upon a fellow holidaymaker in the hotel lobby. Some people, some faces I just want to photograph!
After plucking up some courage, I sent my mother in law over to ask if she fancied a shoot! These are times when I thank all that is holy that I lugged all my camera gear half way across the world! She had to pack, as she was leaving the next day, but had an hour free that afternoon if that was ok. I’m not sure, to this day, I’ve ever left a hotel pool bar so quickly!
I’d decided the beach would be the perfect location and not even the prospect of the dreaded ‘sand everywhere scenario’ could dampen my enthusiasm. With fellow holiday makers wandering up and down the beach and my wife acting as a makeshift assistant I went about taking ‘my new models’ best ever holiday snaps!
I prepare for every shoot………. meticulously. Going over every possible eventuality. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail has always been the mantra I’ve lived by. On this occasion I went with the flow, threw caution to the wind, played it by ear and, you know what, it worked! Sometimes it can all just come together, all work out right and you can end up with some wonderful images. I still prepare for every shoot that I undertake but still carry my camera everywhere……….. just in case!
